Why we exist
AI could not see us. So we built StyleMyCrown.
It began when AI could not see our founder's natural hair on a video call. Then AI headshots lightened skin, straightened hair and reshaped faces. We built tools to measure that bias, and then built the alternative: technology that shows Black and textured hair as it really is.
Hair carries heritage, pride and self-expression. We believe technology should treat it that way.
What we saw in 2024
How AI misrepresented us.
In 2024, when AI generated a person, it often changed who they were, even when all it was asked for was a professional headshot.
Skin was lightened
Deep skin tones were often brightened, as if lighter were the goal.
Hair was straightened
Coils, braids and locs were replaced with straight or loosely wavy hair.
Faces looked younger
Features were smoothed and aged down, whatever the original photo showed.
Bodies were reshaped
Bodies were slimmed or bulked up, and sometimes sexualized.
We measured this with Digital Colorism and Fairscan AI. Many tools still represent textured hair poorly or tokenize it, with very few options. We centered our whole platform on textured hair. We built StyleMyCrown because textured hair deserved a tool made for it, not one that is performative.

We use your photo only to create your try-on. It is never sold or used for AI training.
Rank is earned
Stylists are ranked by fit to the style and by client outcomes. What they pay buys access to clients, never a higher position.
Ingredients in the open
Partner brands disclose their ingredients. Safe ingredients are a requirement, never just a claim.
Celebration, never appropriation
Everyone is welcome to try StyleMyCrown with respect, because we believe in cultural celebration, not appropriation. Anyone who serves this hair with skill and respect is welcome too.
